Rethinking The Concept Of Home*

Our dialogue of #Architecture_post_COVID19 moves from “Urban Mobility” to “Rethinking the concept of home”, which one of the topics triggered by this pandemic. As this long isolation pushed people to change the idea of what a home can be. It made us realize that home isn’t just a place of residence, our homes can be our working place, gym, meditation and relaxation place, and our connection to nature.

Being confined in our houses for months, made us (as users and designers) rethink our requirements and needs, the quality and comfort of homes for all family members will become at the top of the list. What aspect of your homes did the pandemic made you rethink?

Having a connection to outdoor through our houses, an aspect that is often neglected especially in small residential units and apartments, has a major importance that was emphasized to us as, users and designers, through the lockdown. Whether it’s a small balcony, a home garden, or access to a park, outdoor space has an important role in enhancing the quality of life.

Having a rooftop or a terrace is not the whole objective, designing them to be usable is what we are calling for.

Courtyards are one of the ways to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoors, Bringing in air, light, and shade through a private outdoor space. It is one of the traditional architectural elements that has been used in different cultures, that the pandemic and isolation of called to revive.
